Your home is most likely the biggest investment you'll ever make - so you likely have homeowners insurance. In the event you need to make a claim, there are steps you should or, in some cases, need to take.

Here are some steps suggested by the Insurance Information Institute:

Report any crime to the police

If your home is broken into or damaged during a criminal act, you will need to file a police report. Take note of police or any witnesses you speak to.

Contact your insurance company immediately

Your insurance agent should be able to guide you through the process. Once you've ensured everyone is safe, your next call should be to your insurance company. They should be able to help you figure out what's covered, what your deductible is, and what the next steps will be.

Document Damage

Before making any temporary repairs, be sure to take pictures and video of the damage in question.

Save Receipts

If you need to relocate to a hotel or make temporary repairs, be sure to save the receipts. You may be able to be reimbursed for the expenses.

Promptly fill out claim forms

Once you determine you want to file a claim, fill out all forms promptly. The last thing you want is for a claim to be denied because you waited too long.

Prepare for the insurance adjuster

An insurance adjuster will be the person who determines how much the insurer is going to pay for your claim. To make this process go more smoothly, make a list of damaged articles, and provide any available receipts you may have for damaged items. In addition, be prepared to show any structural damage, Once the adjuster visits, he or she may tell you to get the damage fixed and submit the claim for reimbursement, or he or she may even cut you a check on the spot.

Review Your Coverage

The last thing you want is to find out your coverage is lacking after the fact. Every so often, you should review your coverage to make sure it's adequate.

According to Gerardi Insurance, a homeowners policy typically will protect:

  • Your House and Attached Structures
  • Personal Property
  • Personal Liability
  • Detached Structures
  • Loss of Use

You may also choose to buy additional coverage for:

  • Personal Property Replacement Cost
  • Personal Injury
  • Scheduled Valuable Items Coverage
  • Identity Theft Protection
